Conversation Summary: How do we remain open to the views and words of others, when their words and assumptions cause us pain?

Summary of the Moving Forward Conversation Series Follow-up Discussion held on March 21, 2017.

1. How do we remain open to hearing the views and words of others when their words and assumptions cause us pain?

2. Why is it so easy for some people to attribute their success to individual merit, while assuming that the success of others is due to some type of special treatment for members of one or more underrepresented groups?

These are just two of the issues we covered in our first Moving Forward Conversation on March 21st which included students from our undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs, as well as staff and faculty. The conversation was engaging, and at times very emotional, as we tried to put ourselves in one another’s shoes and talk about solutions. If you weren’t able to join us, you were missed.

I hope you will share your story on the Moving Forward website. The next deadline is April 20. I also hope that you will be in the room for our next Moving Forward Conversation on April 18, where the topic will be responding to issues about diversity and inclusion raised in specific courses and programs.
